Thank You!

On behalf of Nancy and myself I just wanted to write a quick thank you to everyone who made 2013 such a great year.

Let's start with our staff. Maura did legion duty in the bus and made that part work for us. The ticket booth or bus is the first contact everyone has with the drive-in and she put a friendly professional face to that. Big thanks for that and so much more.

Amanda and Amber were back in the canteen and you only have to read the postings to know how great they are. Shannon was also back part time and she's great although I think we're going to be losing her to real estate now that she has her licence. Caitlin and Natalie rounded out the team and of course Albert the Bottle Crusher made everything clean. Then there's Bob (aka Chimo) who covered for me when I had to go to one of the other theaters. Well played Grasshopper.

Thanks to all of you for making it work and being part of the fun.

Our booker Cathy who is also a friend and adviser, once again put together brilliant programs and shepherded the films through the vagaries of Friday shipping and all the other perils. Thanks Cathy!

I have to thank all the people at the film companies who donated so generously to our annual pajama party. It was amazing! So Jennifer and Margaret and Sri and Aimee and everyone else, thank you so much.

It's a difficult time in the industry. By now everyone has heard about the impending digital dawn. We are looking at anywhere from $90,000 to $120,000 to upgrade our equipment. It's daunting. To suddenly have to add that kind of debt to a system that is otherwise working perfectly is putting some people out of business. We are committed to keeping the Mustang open regardless. We just have to figure out the most effective way to do that. Our customers have been more than generous and offered to help with fundraisers, and things like that.

Nancy and I have made a decision that despite how kind and wonderful that is, we feel the business should absorb the cost. However it is a lovely moving gesture and we really do appreciate it.

2013 was a lot of things. We had great weather, a wealth of family movies and a calendar that seemed to be on fast forward. I can't tell you where the summer went. Seems like just the other day we were getting ready for that first weekend in May and now we're closed. I know people would like us to stay until Thanksgiving but it just doesn't work out. We're tired. Straight up, every night is a killer. We love it but it's hard. The other thing is once we made a commitment to family entertainment and rooted out the drinkers and partyers, the fall became a losing proposition. You folks are busy with school and hockey and trying to figure out how to make lunches that aren't quarantined. There's no time for the drive-in and I totally get that. So rather than dragging it out we just shut it down. Sleep is righteous.

Two other notes about our staff.

I cannot say enough great things about Marina who runs the website, twitter and Facebook accounts. She has taken an idea and made it an entity unto itself. I am aware of the power of social media and she does an amazing job. Not just based on the results, which are phenomenal, but also in the manner she represents us.

Finally, I have to admit, I have it easy. I make you honk and then go have a nap.

Nancy does all the work, behind and in front of the public. She really deserves the lionís share of the credit for making this work, not to mention for making the fudge. She never gets the credit she deserves because she's quiet and usually working while I'm taking all the credit. She also raises a lot of money every year for animal shelters in the county, again quietly and without any credit. Just so you know, this place doesn't work without her. If it was up to me this place would look like my truck and believe me no one wants that.

At the end of the day it's all about our team. We really are just the custodians. The drive-in is its own magical place. Thanks to all for being a part of it!

Recently we were voted the third most popular attraction in Prince Edward County, behind The Sandbanks and Lake On The Mountain. It's an incredible honor and we are over the moon. So thanks to everyone for making that happen and thanks to all of you who participated in the 2013 season.

The one thing I can promise you is that we will be back, bigger and better than ever, the first weekend in May 2014.

See you at the movies. Until then the cheques in the mail and I'm outta here.

See you next year.

~ Paul (for everyone)
